Tejano Nation journalist and photographer Mariaelena Villarreal has been named the official photographer for Hohner Accordions, the world’s leading manufacturer of accordions. Villarreal, who has been with Tejano Nation since 2019, is a passionate advocate for Tejano and Conjunto music and culture. She has covered many events and festivals featuring some of the most prominent artists in the genre, such as Los Texmaniacs, Sunny Sauceda, and Eva Ybarra. She has also interviewed legends like Flaco Jimenez and Ruben Garza.
Villarreal’s work has been recognized by Hohner Accordions, which has appointed her as their official photographer. She will be responsible for capturing the essence and beauty of the accordion, as well as the stories and emotions of the musicians who play it. Villarreal is grateful and excited by this opportunity, as she considers the accordion to be an integral part of Tejano and Conjunto music.
“I am beyond honored to be named an official Hohner photographer and represent their prominent brand. I have been taking photographs and writing for Norteño, Regional, Tejano, and Conjunto music for many years now, and Mr. Gilbert Reyes of Hohner has given me a chance to be part of the Hohner family and I am truly grateful,” said Villarreal. “He has given me a one-of-a-kind opportunity to do what I love, and that is to photograph all the beautiful artists and events that are Hohner. For me, that means capturing all the musicians and their drive to see their dreams come true.”
Villarreal will also continue to write for Tejano Nation, as well as for Street Talk magazine, where she has had a column since 2017. She said she hopes to inspire more people to appreciate and enjoy Tejano and Conjunto music, as well as to celebrate the rich and diverse culture of Texas and Mexico.
