Music legend Fito Olivares passes away from cancer at 75

Sad news in the music industry today as we learn of the passing of music legend Fito Olivares from cancer. He was 75.

Latin Groove News reports the Cumbia master had been bravely battling against multiple myeloma cancer, his wife announced the news this morning.

The news outlet said, “His saxophone arrangements, style, and memorable songs are part of the music and social consciousness of Latinos around the world.”

Olivares with his band La Pura Sabrosura were known for classic mega hits including “Juana La Cubans,” “La Gallina,” “La Guera Salome,” “El Colesterol,” and “Aguita De Melon.”

Fito Olivares, born Rodolfo Olivares, was born in Tamaulipas, Mexico in 1947. After starting to play professionally at the age of 16, Olivares played with and wrote music for, groups like Duet Estrella as well as Tam and Tex before forming his own band Fito Olivares Y La Pura Sabrosura in Houston in 1980.
