Los Angeles, CA — With a catchy hashtag in Spanish urging young L.A. Latinas to check their breasts (#TocateLasChichis), the celebrated all-female band Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea and Keep A Breast Foundation announced the launch of a life-saving campaign promoting breast cancer prevention and resources via the use of a free app developed by the foundation.
The 45-day campaign will span Hispanic Heritage Month and Breast Cancer Prevention Month, which together last from September 15 through October 31, 2022. During this time, L.A. Latinas will be encouraged to download the free app and help spread the word about it.
According to the National Cancer Institute, about 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, and some 12,000 women age 40 or younger are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. The good news is that, with early detection, the disease can be defeated.
“Our breast self-check app connects users who think they may have discovered something during their check with a telehealth medical professional,” said Shaney Jo Darden, founder of Keep A Breast. “Having the world-renowned Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea team up with us in this vital campaign fills us with joy. They are beaming examples of what it means to not only overcome adversity but thrive and triumph over it.
“Breast cancer is not a stranger to us Mariachi Divas,” said founder Cindy Shea. “We welcome the opportunity to help other L.A. Latinas prevent it by using the KAB app.”
The resource-filled app is compatible with both Apple and Android platforms and has interfaces in English, Spanish, and French.
With multiple music nominations and awards, Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea is the first all-female mariachi band ever to be nominated for — and eventually win — a Grammy Award.
