Los Palominos are celebrating 30 years in the music industry and the GRAMMY-winning group from Uvalde, Texas were honored in their hometown on March 15 as the Tejano group was featured in a commissioned mural celebrating famous people from Uvalde.
The 40-foot mural, commissioned by SkyWay Entertainment, is on the side of the historic Rexall Soda Fountain store featuring Los Palominos, among other famous hometown heroes from the “Honey Capital of Texas,” including OSCAR-winning actor Matthew McConaughey, and Dale Evans, legendary actress, singer and songwriter.
Los Palominos performed at the ceremony and were honored to be a part of the mural. “This a real special day for us. We’re really appreciative of this recognition,” commented James Arreola of Los Palominos at the unveiling. “This beautiful mural that they painted puts our band on the wall here in the city of Uvaled. We’re proud of it. We’re proud of our community. We’ve been trying to do our part with our festival trying to give back to the community that has given to us because we went to school here, we’ve grown up here, we were born here. It’s a special place for us.”
Los Palominos host their annual Palomino Fest, produced by the Uvalde Festival and Events Association, in coordination with Southwest Texas Junior College, every Labor Day weekend in September since 1995 to raise money for the community including scholarships.
Johnny Arreola, who left Los Palominos last year to concentrate on Christian music and ministry, said. “We were blessed to be recognized in this mural. This mural showcases many of the attributes and personalities of our region. To my family, friends, brothers and sisters in Christ, and fellow community patrons of Uvalde, TX; thank you for your continued support.”
Los Palominos were formed in 1986 by four brothers under the name Los Tremendos Pequeños. Their music includes polka, rancheras, boleros, ballads, and cumbias. The group, who became Los Palominos in 1991, won both a GRAMMY award and a Latin GRAMMY for Best Tejano Album in 1999 with Por Eso Te Amo, adding two more Latin GRAMMYs for Best Tejano Album in 2006 with Evoluciones, and in 2017 for the album Piénsalo.
