Award-winning radio personality and music store owner Monica Peña joins Tejano Nation as a contributor and will cover Tejano events in Houston and surrounding areas.
A native of Houston, Texas, Peña began her radio career with BNet Radio-Tejano in 2003. At the young age of 25, she was the first female radio DJ for BNet and the first female DJ for the Tejano internet radio industry. She has gained a huge following with listeners worldwide and interviewed many Tejano artists like Gary Hobbs, David Marez, Siggno, Jay Perez, and Elida Reyna, just to name a few.
“Monica’s radio experience and her extensive knowledge of Tejano music and culture is a great addition to Tejano Nation,” said John Henry Medina, Digital Managing Editor at Tejano Nation. “Tejano music fans can look forward to the amazing content and exclusive interviews with Tejano’s biggest stars and emerging artists that Monica will bring to Tejano Nation.”
In May of 2019, Peña was awarded the “Best Internet Radio Personality of the Year” at the inaugural All-Star Music Awards in San Antonio, Texas. She was Program Director for Simply Tejano and Tejano Y Mas radio stations in Houston.
“Joining Tejano Nation is truly an honor,” said Peña. “Thank you to John Henry Medina for the opportunity to highlight the great talent that we have here in Houston and the surrounding areas.”
In October 2016, Peña created TejanoMusicCenter.com, an online Tejano music store with CDs, DVDs, merchandise, and pro-audio equipment.
Peña is married to Carlos Maldonado, lead vocalist of Grupo Fuerte, and they have three children. She works alongside her husband at Fuerte Studios with their new record label Fuerte Records, which has released new music with legendary artists including Pete Espinoza (former vocalist of La Fiebre), David DeAnda Y Xelencia, Impozzible, Los Pekadorez, and Los Monarcas. She is currently pursuing her Bachelors in Business Administration.
