San Antonio-based Conjunto accordionist Brenda Martinez released her debut album, “Favoritas De Mis Padres,” on Tuesday, December 17, 2019. In addition to the standard availability on all digital platforms and CD, the album is also available as a vinyl LP, a first for Conjunto for several decades.
“Favoritas De Mis Padres” is a collection of Conjunto tunes, paying homage to the classic instrumental albums of masters like Ruben Naranjo, Gilberto Perez, Flaco Jimenez and Ruben Vela, and is dedicated to her parents. The selections include polkas, a huapango, and a reimagined timeless bolero, all with the feel and vibe of old-school Conjunto. Produced by and released on Rancho Alegre Records, the album was recorded at Escalante Music in San Antonio and features Grammy Award winner Oscar Garcia on bajo sexto, bass and drums.
Martinez released “Lola,” the first single from the album in November 2019. In conjunction with the album release, the follow-up single is called “La Galleta (Cookie Polka).” “La Galleta” is an original polka, composed by Martinez herself, and draws heavily on her Conjunto roots on the west side of San Antonio, but adding a modern twist.
To celebrate the release of the record, the legendary Janie’s Record Shop is hosting a meet and greet on Saturday, December 21st from 1 to 3 p.m. at the store at 1012 Bandera Rd in San Antonio.
“Favoritas De Mis Padres” is also available for sale in CD and on vinyl LP online at shop.ranchoalegre.org and can be purchased and streamed on all digital platforms.
