Anxious energy filled Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino in Arizona as The Most Wanted Man Ramiro “Ram” Herrera was gracing an excited audience with his gift of his music on February 16, 2017. Tejano Nation contributor DJ Peaches caught up with the award-winning singer and songwriter, who is not only a key element in Tejano music, but is considered a legend.

Ram is the youngest of his siblings and was picked on because of his problem with stuttering. Singing helped him over come his problem. At the age of 5, he would sing one of his favorite songs by The Beatles, the classic 1963 hit “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.”

Herrera began his career with David Lee Garza Y Los Musicales in 198, and recorded three albums. During his career, he shared the stage with Emilio Navaira, Freddy Fender and Selena. He has received many awards, including Male Entertainer of the Year, Lifetime Achievement Award and a Latin Grammy in 2002.

In 2015, the singer released a soulful album, Mucho Mas Que Amor, released under the VMB Music Group label. Songs from the album include the title track, “Dime Si Estoy Loco” and “Amame Quiereme,” a song written for him but was a hit for Selena.

Herrera is currently working on a new album.

He acknowledged his past problems with drugs and alcohol that has cost him two failed marriages, but emphasizes how important family is.

Herrera talked about music over the course of 15 plus years, memories with fellow musicians and his friends. It’s evident how important family is to Ram.

He became emotional talking about his daughter Katherine Herrera Garza, who was in serious condition after complications delivering a baby girl, Rose Marie Belle. With many prayers from all over the world, Katherine’s condition has improved and baby Rose Marie Belle is in good health.
