New Variety Band founder and bassist Shelby Medina passed away on Tuesday after losing his battle with cancer.
The band made the announcement via their official Facebook page.
“Que gran pedidda resignacion a la familia mucha fortaleza para todos y se nos va un gran ser humano , lo poco que conoci pero era puro CORAZON , Shelby Medina NEW VARIETY BAND The New Variety Band y toda la comunidad tejana siempre te recordaremos comoeras tu alegre,sencillo , talentoso, carismatico, y siempre de buen humor , con una gran humildad y siempre dando la mano a todos gracias por tu musica que nos dejaste … siempre a lado de tu amigo y hermano Arturo Gutierrez y New Variety Band Descanza En Paz , por siempre y para siempre Mr. Shelby Medina RIP.”
Medina passed away at 7:30 Tuesday morning at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas and Tejano stars and fans took to social media to react to the passing of the musician.
“RIP Shelby Medina from The New Variety Band. Man…What a good and kind person. You will be missed brother,” singer Gary Hobbs posted on Facebook.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Mr. Shelby Medina. Shelby will truly be missed, and will forever live in our hearts. We lost a great friend and a great musician. RIP,” Jimmy Gonzalez Y Mazz wrote on their official Facebook page.
“Today a great friend and colleague of ours has gone home to be with the Lord. He was the New Variety Band’s bass player since the beginning. Our condolences to his family and friends. You will be missed friend…Rest In Peace Shelby Medina,” Zereno posted on Facebook.
“Great friend and amazing musician with New Variety Band is now in heaven. Rest In Peace Shelby Medina,” Super Tejano 102.1 morning personality Mando San Roman wrote on Facebook.

A tribute with performances by New Variety Band and the Gaslight Band has been planned for Medina at the Gaslight Club in McAllen, Texas, on Friday, September 11, 2015.
