MCALLEN – The City of McAllen renamed a city street to honor Tejano legend Narciso Delgado on Tuesday. Narciso Delgado Drive was added to the Fresno Avenue street sign.

Delgado, known as Chicho, lived in McAllen from 1935 until his death on Jan. 27, 1975.

“The city of McAllen is a special place in the life of Narciso Delgado, my father, where he found the inspiration to compose his music,” Delgado’s daughter Dr. Imelda Delgado Cortez said during the ceremony.  “From our modest home the boleros and the foxtrots that he composed flowed out to that Fresno street reaching the ear of passers by and watching the children walk to ‘La Escuela Blanca’.”

In the mid-1930s, Delgado penned the song “Llegaste,” which was registered in the U.S. Library of Congress in 1935. His composing continued, and many of these songs are registered in the United States and internationally. In the 1940s, Delgado was also listed as composer along with Fred Fernandez for the song “Nochechita,” one of the most endearing songs in the history of Latin music.

“Over the years, my father’s music was heard in Europe, Canada, Mexico and South America. But, Narciso Delgado’s heart and spirit would remain in McAllen.” she added. “Fresno Avenue is special, it is where his home base was located and where he developed his music.”
