A young Selena Quintanilla-Perez fan is proving that the Queen of Tejano music continues to inspire new generations, one pumpkin at a time.
Seven-year-old daughter of Shelby W. recently brought her love for Selena into the classroom with a creative pumpkin decorating project for a school contest. When her mother asked what she wanted to create, there was no hesitation about the theme.
“My daughter is 7 years old and had a pumpkin decorating contest at school. I asked what she wanted to do for her pumpkin and without hesitation she said Selena!” Shelby shared on social media.
The mother-daughter team turned that idea into a three-dimensional tribute to the legendary Tejano singer, using two pumpkins as the foundation and craft materials to build the rest of Selena’s figure. Even baby doll hands became part of the creative design.
They made the outfit themselves, while the young Selena fan took charge of adding the rhinestones, giving the costume its signature sparkle.
The finished creation earned the young artist Most Original in her age group, making the project even more special.
For Shelby, however, the experience meant much more than winning a school contest. It was also a heartfelt connection between two generations of Selena fans.
“I first learned about Selena when I was 7 years old, so my daughter’s love for her at the same age is so heart warming,” she shared.
More than three decades after Selena’s passing, her music, fashion and cultural influence continue to reach young fans who weren’t born during her career. Projects like this are another reminder of the lasting impact of the beloved singer.
How to Create Your Own Selena-Themed Pumpkin
Want to bring a little Selena magic to your own Halloween pumpkin decorating project? Here are some ideas inspired by the young fan’s creation.
Materials you may need:
- Two pumpkins (one for the head and one for the body)
- Purple craft foam, felt or fabric
- Black yarn or felt for the hair
- Rhinestones and glitter
- Baby doll hands or craft doll hands
- Skin-tone paint
- Glue or craft adhesive
- Wooden dowel or sturdy craft support
- Small toy microphone or handmade microphone
- Red paint or felt for the lips
Step 1: Create the body
Use a larger pumpkin as the body. Cover it with purple fabric or paint it purple to recreate Selena’s legendary purple jumpsuit, inspired by her iconic 1995 Houston Astrodome performance.
Step 2: Make the head
Use a second, smaller pumpkin or a Styrofoam ball for Selena’s head. Paint it a skin tone and securely attach it above the body using a wooden dowel or another sturdy support.
Step 3: Add Selena’s signature hairstyle
Use black yarn, felt or construction paper to recreate Selena’s recognizable hairstyle, including her signature bangs and pulled-back hair.
Step 4: Design the outfit
Cut purple fabric or craft foam to create the jumpsuit. Add rhinestones, glitter and silver accents to capture the sparkle of Selena’s iconic stage wardrobe.
Step 5: Add the finishing touches
Attach craft hands, add a miniature microphone and finish the look with red lips, hoop earrings and other details inspired by Selena’s stage appearance.
Step 6: Let the creativity shine
Let children help decorate the outfit, place the rhinestones and choose the finishing touches. As Shelby’s daughter’s project demonstrates, some of the most memorable details come from a child’s imagination.
Other Selena-Inspired Pumpkin Ideas
If building a three-dimensional figure sounds like too much work, there are simpler ways to celebrate Selena with a pumpkin.

- The Purple Jumpsuit Pumpkin: Paint a pumpkin purple and decorate it with silver rhinestones and glitter to recreate Selena’s iconic stage look.
- The Como La Flor Pumpkin: Paint a pumpkin white or pink, add a beautiful red rose and write “Selena” across the front.
- The Selena Silhouette Pumpkin: Paint a pumpkin purple or gold and add a black silhouette inspired by Selena’s recognizable hairstyle and stage presence.
- The Microphone Pumpkin: Decorate a pumpkin with a miniature microphone, musical notes and Selena-inspired details.
Whether it’s a school contest, a family Halloween activity or simply a creative way to celebrate a music legend, a Selena-themed pumpkin is a fun project for fans of all ages.
And as this young fan has shown, Selena’s legacy isn’t just remembered by the generation that grew up listening to her — it’s being discovered, celebrated and passed down to the next generation.
