Tejano music star Michael Salgado is temporarily stepping away from live performances as he recovers from a stroke he suffered while performing in Safford, Arizona, on October 9, 2026.
In an official health update shared today (Oct. 15), Salgado thanked fans, family, friends and fellow musicians for their prayers and support, explaining that his medical team has advised him to take time off while doctors continue evaluating his condition.
“Music and performing for all of you have always been a huge part of my life,” Salgado said in his statement. “While it is difficult for me to step away from something I love so much, I understand that my health and recovery must come first.”
According to Salgado, the medical emergency occurred shortly after he performed his first song in Safford. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital before being airlifted to a hospital in Tucson, Arizona, for further medical attention.
Two days later, he flew home to San Antonio, Texas, where his medical team continued monitoring his condition and conducting additional tests.
Following further evaluation on Thursday, his cardiologist, neurologist and stroke specialist determined that temporarily suspending performances would be in his best interest.
As a result, Salgado said his upcoming performances would need to be postponed for the next couple of weeks, pending further evaluation and medical clearance to return to the stage.
Michael Salgado Thanks Fans for Their Prayers
Despite the difficult circumstances, Salgado expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of concern and encouragement he has received since the news of his stroke.
“I ask for your continued prayers, patience, and understanding during this time,” he said. “I am deeply grateful to my family, friends, fellow musicians, fans, and everyone who has shown me so much love and concern.”
He also expressed hope for his eventual return to performing, crediting his faith, continued prayers and medical team as important sources of support during his recovery.
“With God’s help, continued prayers, and the care of my medical team, [I] look forward to the day I can return to the stage and do what I love most — performing for all of you,” Salgado said.
The singer did not announce a specific return date, emphasizing that his recovery and his doctors’ recommendations will determine when he can resume performing.
A Defining Voice in Tejano and Norteño Music
Salgado has built a lasting place in Tejano and regional Mexican music through his distinctive vocal style and accordion-driven sound, connecting audiences across Texas and beyond.

He became widely recognized through his hit song “Cruz de Madera,” which helped establish his name among fans of Tejano and norteño music. His repertoire also includes popular recordings such as “Palomita Blanca,” and his career has crossed musical boundaries through his work as a singer, songwriter and performer.
Known for blending traditional regional Mexican influences with a contemporary approach, Salgado has remained a familiar presence on concert stages, at festivals and at dance halls serving Tejano and música mexicana audiences.
The two-time Latin Grammy winner’s connection with fans extends beyond individual hits, with his music becoming part of the soundtrack for generations of listeners who have followed his career.
