Devin Banda Arrested…in ‘#1 On The Charts’ Music Video

South Texas singer-songwriter turns a Walmart parking lot into the scene of her tongue-in-cheek country debut — all in the name of making it to #1

Devin Banda is officially behind bars — at least in her new music video.

The South Texas singer-songwriter is making her country debut with “#1 On The Charts,” a clever, tongue-in-cheek single about the outrageous lengths artists might go to in pursuit of fame, attention and, of course, a spot at the top of the charts.

And for the accompanying music video, Banda took that concept quite literally — ending up “arrested” in a Walmart parking lot in Hidalgo County, Texas.

Before anyone calls the sheriff, there’s no real crime here. The arrest is all part of the storyline.

Banda recently joined Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo to talk about the song, its unusual inspiration and how her husband and producer, Lucky Joe, helped turn her wild music-video idea into reality.

“Yes, yeah, it’s been a while,” Banda told Romeo about finally releasing the song, which had been sitting in her musical vault. “I finally just got the courage to just go with it and release, to start the process of releasing country music.”

The idea for “#1 On The Charts” actually came from a much more frightening encounter — a shark.

While wade fishing at South Padre Island, Banda spotted a shark swimming dangerously close to her leg.

“I was freaking out,” she recalled.

Naturally, Banda called her mother to tell her about the encounter. Her mom responded with the kind of humor that only a mother can deliver in the middle of a near-shark-attack story.

“She said…‘Oh, you were almost number one.’”

That comment sparked Banda’s imagination.

She began thinking about all the outrageous things someone could do to become “#1,” eventually writing down scenarios that became the inspiration for the song — including one particularly bizarre possibility: getting hit by a bus in a Walmart parking lot.

That idea eventually evolved into the music video.

Banda told Romeo that she wanted the video to feature a Walmart, a police officer and, yes, an arrest.

“I want to do it in a Walmart. I want to do it where there’s a cop involved. I want to get arrested,” Banda explained.

The concept initially sounded like a tall order.

“But he was like, ‘I love it. Let’s do it,’” Banda said of Lucky Joe. “And he made it happen.”

According to Banda, she essentially handed her husband the blueprint and showed up to find the entire production ready to go.

“I literally just showed up and he has everything set up,” she said. “So I have literally the best husband in the world because he legit made everything happen.”

The result is a music video that perfectly matches the playful spirit of “#1 On The Charts,” turning Banda’s fictional brush with the law into part of the song’s larger commentary on celebrity culture, viral headlines, and the sometimes ridiculous ways people can become famous.

The song itself is also a significant musical step for Banda, who is exploring country music without abandoning her Tejano roots.

Rather than completely removing the accordion to make the track sound more traditionally country, Banda intentionally kept it in the production.

“When people noticed that the accordion was in the song when I first released it, people were like, ‘You should release an actual country song without accordion,’” she told Romeo.

But Banda had a different idea.

“I wanted it to show my roots,” she explained. “I want people to know our genre, to know Tejano music.”

For Banda, country music represents an opportunity to introduce more listeners to the culture and musical traditions that shaped her.

“I think I want to try to bring as much attention as I can to the Tejano genre by doing country music,” she said. “Show them what our Raza is capable of.”

Born in Brownwood, Texas, raised in the Buda and Kyle communities and now based in South Texas, Banda has spent much of her career blending her Texas upbringing with her Mexican-American heritage.

She first gained statewide attention in 2012 as the runner-up on Tejano Idol, launching a career that would include award nominations, radio success and a dedicated fan base.

Her 2017 debut album, Unstoppable, earned a Tejano Music Awards nomination for Best New Female Artist and produced radio favorites including “Un Poquito Mas.” After a four-year recording hiatus, she returned with the six-song EP Vamos a Brindar, featuring songs such as “Me Olvidaré de Ti.”

In September 2023, Banda married fellow Tejano artist and Latin Grammy nominee Lucky Joe, who has since become an important songwriting and production partner.

Now, Banda is opening another chapter.

She told Romeo that several additional country songs have already been recorded and are ready to go, while she is also beginning to make connections with country radio and exploring opportunities to perform country gigs.

Her first country interview came just recently, and she says she’s excited about where the new musical adventure could lead.

As for “#1 On The Charts,” Banda may not have actually been arrested, but she has accomplished something much more important: she found a way to turn a shark encounter, a mother’s joke and a Walmart parking lot into a country music debut.

And if that doesn’t get her attention — well, she may just have to come up with another plan.
