The celebration marks the grand opening of a newly expanded permanent exhibit honoring Fender’s life and career, set to take place in the South Texas city he proudly called home.

The event promises a full evening of activities, including panel discussions featuring collaborators, a songwriter showcase, a memorial motorcycle ride, and a $1,000 Freddy Fender look-a-like contest. The night will culminate with a tribute concert by Grammy Award-winning group Los Texmaniacs and Country star Rick Treviño.

“As a steward of Freddy’s musical legacy for over 50 years, it is my great pleasure today to share this exciting news with you all,” said Evangeline Huerta, wife of the late icon and executor of his estate. “The people made Freddy. So it only seemed right to celebrate his enduring legacy with those who’ve kept Freddy’s artistic legacy alive and made this moment possible for our family.”

Building on the success of a 2024 exhibition, the new permanent installation has been reimagined and expanded under the direction of curator-turned-historian Veronique Medrano, who now serves as a representative for the Freddy Fender Estate. The exhibit reflects a continued partnership between the City of San Benito and the Estate, highlighting years of dedication to preserving the artist’s cultural impact.

Housed at the Cultural Heritage Museum within the San Benito Community Building, the exhibit will showcase hundreds of rare artifacts from Fender’s private collection—many of which have never been displayed publicly. Organizers say the immersive experience will give fans a deeper look into the life and legacy of one of South Texas’ most influential artists.

Plans are also underway to connect visitors to commemorative landmarks throughout San Benito, including the city’s iconic water tower, recently renovated and bearing Fender’s image.

Titled Freddy Fender: The Legacy Lives On,” the celebration invites fans from across the globe to gather in San Benito for a tribute to a man whose journey remains one of perseverance and cultural pride. Born into poverty, Fender rose from working in the cotton fields to international stardom—famously describing his path as going from “picking cotton to picking guitar.”

In 1956, he became one of the first artists to record Spanish-language rock and roll, earning nicknames like “the Mexican Elvis” and “El Bebop Kid.” His career reached new heights in the mid-1970s with back-to-back No. 1 hits “Before the Next Teardrop Falls” and “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights,” which topped Billboard’s Country, Pop, and Rock charts. The success brought him major accolades, including the Country Music Association’s Single of the Year and the Academy of Country Music’s Most Promising Male Artist honors in 1975.

Fender remained a beloved figure on national television throughout the 1970s and ’80s, and his influence continues to resonate decades later. He passed away in 2006 at the age of 69 after battling lung cancer, leaving behind a globally recognized legacy marked by numerous awards and Grammy nominations.

His hometown has long honored his contributions. In 2005, San Benito unveiled a $1.4 million water tower featuring his likeness and the words “San Benito Hometown of Freddy Fender,” which was recently renovated. Two years later, the Freddy Fender Museum opened alongside the Conjunto Music Museum, further cementing his place in Texas music history.

Tickets for the June 13 event will be available starting April 17, 2026, at the San Benito Cultural Arts Museum and the San Benito Public Library. More information can be found at freddyfender.com.
