A new documentary titled “The Truth” is shining a spotlight on the life, legacy, and ongoing legal battle surrounding Joe Lopez, the co-founder and longtime frontman of Grupo Mazz.

More than just a music documentary, the project—seven years in the making—dives deep into the controversies that have followed Lopez since his 2006 conviction and imprisonment. Through interviews, archival footage, and firsthand accounts, the film presents the perspective of Lopez, his legal team, and his supporters, who continue to maintain his innocence.

A Story Beyond the Headlines

At the center of “The Truth” is a renewed effort to challenge the narrative surrounding Lopez’s conviction. His legal advocates argue that key evidence was omitted during his trial and are working toward filing a writ of actual innocence.

Lopez, who was paroled in March 2018 after serving 12 years of a 20-year sentence for multiple sex offenses involving his niece, has consistently denied the allegations. The documentary gives him a platform to publicly share his version of events—something supporters say he was never fully able to do during the original trial.

Speaking at a recent press conference in Harlingen, Lopez reflected on his experience and maintained his innocence.

“I am going to tell you what really happened… I didn’t do nothing to her,” Lopez said. “I went through hell… for 12 years, I didn’t see the sun, didn’t see the light… and all because of who I was.”

He also described the emotional toll of incarceration and the challenges of rebuilding his life and career after release, adding: “I’m trying my best… to come back and be normal.”

Family Speaks Out

A driving force behind the documentary is his wife, Sandra Lopez, who has become a vocal advocate for his exoneration and for others she believes have been wrongfully convicted.

During the same press conference, she spoke passionately about the broader impact of criminal accusations on families and communities, framing the documentary as both personal and educational.

“It’s time to share Joe’s heart with the world. It’s time to share the truth,” she said. “This is about education… if there’s one family we can keep from going through this, then we’ve done our job.”

Sandra Lopez also emphasized how the case has affected their entire family and highlighted what she sees as systemic challenges, particularly for Latinos navigating the legal system.

Revisiting a Tejano Legacy

While much of “The Truth” focuses on legal battles, it also revisits Lopez’s undeniable influence on Tejano music. As a founding member and vocalist of Grupo Mazz, he helped define the genre’s modern sound and decades of hits that shaped generations.

The documentary blends that musical legacy with the personal struggles that followed, offering a complex and deeply polarizing portrait of one of Tejano’s most influential and controversial figures.

Building Toward What’s Next

Produced by Dream Team Media Productions“The Truth” also features insights from producers and attorneys involved in Lopez’s ongoing legal efforts.

Despite growing attention and discussion, no official release date has been announced.

As anticipation builds, the documentary is expected to spark conversation across the Tejano community and beyond—revisiting a story that continues to divide opinion while aiming to present what its creators call the full picture.
