Rio Grande Valley singer-songwriter Beatriz Gonzalez is back with new music, releasing her latest single, “Cumbia Tumbao,” a lively track that blends traditional cumbia elements with modern reggaeton flair.

During a recent conversation with Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo, Gonzalez shared the creative story behind the song, explaining that the idea began with a desire to create something upbeat and fun while experimenting with multiple musical styles.

“So Cumbia Tumbao came out because I wanted to make something fun,” Gonzalez said. “I really like to mix a little bit of genres. For me, cumbia is very Mexican, and I love reggaeton. So this is more like a cumbia-ton type of song.”

The track was produced in-house at Gonzalez’s own Palabra Records, where she worked closely with producer and engineer JJ Mendoza to craft the sound from the ground up. The process began with the beat, then gradually evolved as the team experimented with different musical textures.

“We started with the beat and just began exploring sounds,” she said. “I kept a little bit of saxophone in there to keep it alive because cumbia has that. Of course, you need the cowbell, and those little elements really bring out the cumbia.”

While honoring those classic cumbia staples, Gonzalez also wanted to inject a modern rhythm inspired by reggaeton icon Daddy Yankee.

“I said, ‘Give me a little bit of that Daddy Yankee reggaeton beat,’” she recalled. “At first it was very simple, but it came out very cool. I was like, ‘Oh, this is a jam.’”

Gonzalez also wrote the song’s lyrics herself, revealing that the track had actually been sitting unreleased for years.

“This song has been in the vault for about three years,” she said. “I was like, okay, it’s time. It’s time to release and finally get this music out.”

Beyond its danceable groove, “Cumbia Tumbao” reflects Gonzalez’s cultural roots growing up in South Texas.

“The culture is in there, bringing in that Chicano culture and what I grew up with here in the Valley,” she explained. “It’s just a danceable song that I figured people might like.”

Music has been part of Gonzalez’s life since early childhood. She began singing with mariachi groups at just three years old, developing a strong foundation in traditional Mexican music. Her talent continued to grow throughout her youth, including performing with the University of Texas–Pan American Mariachi ensemble during high school.

Gonzalez later pursued music education in college and expanded her reach even further with appearances on a musical competition television show in Los Angeles, demonstrating her dedication to the craft early in her career.

Today, she is recognized for blending traditional Mexican influences with contemporary sounds, creating a unique artistic identity that spans regional Mexican, Tejano, and world music styles.

And for Gonzalez, experimentation isn’t about chasing trends — it’s about following her creative instincts.

“I don’t like to be restricted,” she said. “Some people say, ‘She’s trying this or trying that.’ But I’m not trying it — I’m doing it because it’s what comes out of me creatively.”

That passion for creativity continues to drive her forward. In addition to “Cumbia Tumbao,” Gonzalez revealed she is currently working on more new music that will showcase even more variety.

“I’m still working on new music — mariachi, boleros, and more,” she said. “You know me, it’s variety. I like to sprinkle a little bit of everything.”

For Gonzalez, bringing musical ideas to life remains the most rewarding part of her journey.

“There’s nothing more fulfilling than having an idea and seeing it all come together,” she said. “That’s my favorite part of the creative process.”

With “Cumbia Tumbao,” the Rio Grande Valley artist continues to celebrate her roots while pushing her sound forward — proving once again that tradition and innovation can move to the same rhythm.
