He was known as the lead vocalist for his band The Crew, while also mastering multiple instruments including keyboards, bass, drums, guitar, and accordion.

Beyond leading his own group, Hernandez built a reputation as a go-to studio musician and collaborator, lending his talents to numerous artists and projects across the United States.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Music

Born and raised in San Antonio, Hernandez showed extraordinary musical talent at an early age. He began playing drums at just five years old and made his first recording at the age of nine with the St. Frances Glee Club under Sister Mary Theresa.

By 11, he was already performing with local bands and learning additional instruments, including bass, while playing with his family’s conjunto group. At just 14 years old, Hernandez formed his first band, Felix Y Los Quarto Estrellas, which later evolved into Grupo Monticello, recording two 45-rpm records.

His musical abilities quickly caught the attention of industry veterans. As a teenager, Hernandez was invited to perform with Sunny Ozuna and his group Sunny and the Sunliners. By age 17, he was working alongside renowned producer Manny Guerra at AMEN Studios, further establishing himself as one of San Antonio’s most promising musicians.

Throughout his career, Hernandez contributed recordings and performances with respected artists including Shelly LaresOscar G.Ricardo Castillon, and the internationally known group La Mafia.

Expanding His Musical Reach

At 21, Hernandez joined the band Pure Magic, a high-energy act known for its Vegas-style performances under the direction of Jimmy Casas. The experience helped expand his musical reach and stage presence.

He later teamed up with longtime friend Joe Revelez to form Los Dudes, a unique dual-keyboard act that created the sound of a full nine-piece band. The group earned the Most Promising Band honor at the Tejano Music Awards in 1989.

Hernandez also worked with Ram Herrera and The Outlaw Band in the early 1990s, arranging three albums that further showcased his musical depth and production skills.

His talent wasn’t limited to Tejano. Hernandez also toured in the late 1980s with legendary rhythm and blues groups including The CoastersThe Platters, and The Drifters.

Later in his career, he returned prominently to the Tejano scene, performing keyboards with Tejano star Joe Posada.

Awards and Solo Career

Hernandez earned two nominations for Keyboard Player of the Year at the Tejano Academy Awards and took home the honor in 2010. That same year, he signed with Joe Posada’s Baby Dude Records and released his self-titled solo debut album, dedicating the project to the many artists he collaborated with throughout his career.

His remarkable versatility, passion for music, and decades of influence helped solidify his place among San Antonio’s most respected musicians and earned him recognition as a Tejano ROOTS Hall of Famer.
