San Angelo’s Tejano radio landscape changed significantly this month as Saver Media officially dropped the long-running Tejano music format on Q99.5 KQTC Christoval/San Angelo, Texas, transitioning the station to a Christian Adult Contemporary format branded as “99.5 Spirit of Truth Radio.”
According to a report from Radio Insight, Saver Media flipped the station on February 1, ending more than 12 years of Tejano programming that served listeners across the Concho Valley and surrounding areas.
Saver Media co-owner Tony Cuellar, who owns the station alongside his wife Gloria Cuellar, addressed listeners on air and in a video posted to the KQTC Facebook page on January 30, just days before the format change.
“I want to thank God for giving us 12 years in the industry of Tejano music,” Cuellar said. “I want thank every listener that supported the station. Me and my wife has made a decision that God has called us to do other things.”
Under its new identity, KQTC 99.5 Spirit of Truth Radio will air Christian music live and local from its studios in San Angelo, with plans to actively involve churches throughout the area as part of its mission-based programming.
The station’s flip marks the end of a meaningful chapter not only for local Tejano fans, but also for Tejano Nation, which has a deep-rooted history with Q99.5. In October 2015, Q99.5 became the first radio station to air Tejano Nation Radio, helping launch what would later grow into a nationally syndicated show heard on Tejano, Regional Mexican, and Spanish-language stations across the United States—from Florida to Idaho.
Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo reflected on the station’s impact and the Cuellars’ support during the show’s early days.
“It was truly an honor to begin Tejano Nation Radio on Q99.5 more than 10 years ago,” Romeo said. “That station was the launching pad that helped take the show national. I will always be thankful to Gloria and Tony Cuellar for believing in the show and supporting us over a decade ago, and I wish them nothing but the best on their new journey with KQTC and Spirit of Truth Radio.”
While the loss of another Tejano outlet is felt deeply within the community, the legacy of Q99.5’s role in championing the genre—and in helping elevate Tejano Nation—remains firmly etched in Tejano radio history.
