Red Room Recordz releases “Cayó Una Estrella,” a heartfelt tribute track honoring the life and legacy of legendary Tejano saxophonist Jesse Peralez, whose passing in 2025 left a deep and lasting void in the Tejano music community.
Set for release on January 31, marking the anniversary of Peralez’s death, the song was born out of the collective grieving process of close friends and fellow musicians who shared both the stage and brotherhood with the late artist. A video tribute is also expected to follow.
Performed by Greg Ramirez y Klazz featuring Jimmy Isais, “Cayó Una Estrella” was written by Mary Jane Segura and Ignacio Puente and stands as a true labor of love. The project brings together musicians who poured their hearts into honoring a man widely regarded as a pioneer of the Tejano sound.
Jimmy Isais lends his voice to the emotional track, while the instrumental lineup features Adolf Alonzo on bass, Drew Rodriguez on drums, Ignacio Puente on guitar, and Greg Ramirez on keyboards. Together, they laid down the instrumental tracks in the studio, united by respect, loss, and gratitude for their fallen brother in music.
Jesse Peralez was best known for his exceptional saxophone work as an original member of La Mafia, one of the most iconic bands in Tejano music history. His unmistakable sound influenced generations of musicians and became a signature many have tried to replicate. Beyond La Mafia, Peralez also played with notable groups including Xelencia and Magnifico Siete, further cementing his place as a cornerstone of the genre.
More than just a performer, Peralez was also a gifted songwriter whose creativity extended beyond traditional Tejano boundaries. In 2022, he released his solo album Solamente through Red Room Recordz, showcasing a more exploratory side of his artistry and stepping outside the sound many associated with his earlier band work.
Reflecting on the tribute, Mary Jane Segura shared the emotional intent behind the song:
“Ignacio Puente and I wrote this song with Mary Camacho in mind. Through our grief, we wanted to express our love and gratitude for having him in our lives and how he is deeply missed.”
She added that the tribute is only the beginning.
“We thank our brothers in music for this. We will have more projects so everyone can participate in. We want to give our music brothers an opportunity to be part of our tribute to Jesse Peralez.”
With “Cayó Una Estrella,” Red Room Recordz and a circle of devoted friends ensure that Jesse Peralez’s spirit, sound, and influence continue to shine—reminding the Tejano world that while a star may have fallen, its light still guides the music forward.
