Tejano music icon Patsy Torres has returned with a deeply personal new single, “Soy Tuya,” a heartfelt track filled with passion, strength, and the signature style that has defined her four-decade career. The song was produced by multi-Grammy-winning producer Gilbert Velasquez and written by acclaimed songwriter Beto Ramon.
Torres recently opened up about the project on the Tu Música Mi Casa Podcast hosted by Las Vegas singer Veronica Lopez, sharing the story behind the song and what it represents to her at this stage of her career.
“I’m doing my album with Gilbert Velasquez from Velasquez Music,” Torres explained. “He’s done a lot of my albums and different songs, and he said that Ramón wanted me to hear this song. So he gave me this song, and I was excited to do it.”
Hearing the track for the first time with only guitar and vocals, Torres immediately connected with its emotion. “I just loved that it was a love song. You can tell that the person’s really in love when they’re singing it. I see it as my love letter to my fans and my friends out there that have supported me and stayed with me over all these years — and even the new ones. It’s my love letter to them.”
“Soy Tuya” is the first glimpse of a forthcoming album that will showcase the many dimensions of Torres’ artistry. She revealed the project will include energetic cumbias, original compositions, and a spiritual song — a tradition she has embraced since launching her own label, World Class Records.
“With all the other labels, they would never let me put a spiritual or religious song about God on there,” she said. “Ever since I’ve done my own label, I always put one on. I’ve been writing my original gospel songs, so there’ll be one on this album too.”
The record will also feature a special tribute to one of her greatest influences, Patsy Cline. “I’m doing a Patsy Cline song on this album,” Torres shared. “She’s really influenced me a lot. I love her music. I didn’t realize she had so many hits.”
Dr. Patsy Torres’ career began in the early 1980s as a trumpet player for Blue Harmony before she formed the Patsy Torres Band, revolutionizing Tejano performances with choreography, theatrical costume changes, and dynamic stage productions. Her innovations earned her numerous awards and took her to stages around the world.
Beyond music, Torres is a respected advocate for education, health, and social justice. She earned a Ph.D. in Education and Organizational Leadership from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio and leads the non-profit Positive Force Tour Programs Inc., using her platform as an international “edutainer” to inspire youth and communities.
With “Soy Tuya,” Torres once again blends artistry with heart, reminding listeners why her voice remains essential to Tejano music.
