Tejano Gold Countdown will pay tribute to the life and legacy of the unforgettable Emilio Navaira on this weekend’s (August 15–17) episode of the nationally syndicated radio show, hosted by recently announced Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2025 inductee Rudy Treviño.
The show shared more details on social media, posting, “This weekend, Tejano Gold Countdown pays tribute to the life and legacy of the unforgettable Emilio Navaira, while we count down the week’s top 20 Tejano and Regional Mexican hits. Thank you for keeping the spirit of Tejano alive and sharing your amazing music with the world!”
They added, “Nine years may have passed since we lost him, but Emilio Navaira’s spirit still lives in every song and every memory. This month, on what would have been his 63rd birthday, TGC honors his life and legacy with his unforgettable music and the treasured sound of his own voice from past interviews.”
The legendary Tejano singer, affectionately known as “El Rey del Rodeo,” would have celebrated his birthday on August 23. Emilio’s music, life, and legacy are remembered by fans worldwide, continuing to inspire even after his unexpected passing from a heart attack on May 16, 2016.

Emilio was more than just a talented musician — he was a charismatic performer whose high-energy shows, often alongside his brother Raulito Navaira, earned him his famous nickname. Admired for his passion, versatility, and authenticity, Emilio was loved by millions across the United States and Mexico. He was also a devoted father of five and a generous humanitarian, leading his Tejanos For Children charity to support children’s hospitals.
Throughout his groundbreaking career, Emilio fused traditional Mexican music with country, pop, and rock, becoming one of the most influential artists in the Tejano genre. He earned both a Grammy Award for Acuérdate and a Latin Grammy Award for De Nuevo, and his chart-topping hits in both Spanish and English solidified his place as a true musical icon.
