A Lifetime of Music and Legacy
Born Leonardo “Flaco” Jiménez on March 11, 1939, in San Antonio, Texas, Flaco was a musical prodigy and the son of Conjunto pioneer Santiago Jiménez, Sr. With a career that spanned more than seven decades, Flaco brought the accordion to the forefront of American roots music, blending Tejano, Conjunto, country, and rock with effortless mastery.
He rose to international fame collaborating with artists such as The Texas Tornados, Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan, Dwight Yoakam, and The Rolling Stones, bringing Tejano music to new audiences across the globe. His work earned him five Grammy Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy, and a place in both the Tejano Music Hall of Fame and the International Latin Music Hall of Fame.
On Thursday, July 31, the Jiménez family confirmed his passing in a heartfelt social media post:
“It is with great sadness that we share tonight the loss of our father, Flaco Jimenez. He was surrounded by his loved ones and will be missed immensely… Thank you to all of his fans and friends—those who cherished his music. And a big thank you for all of the memories. His legacy will live on through his music and all of his fans. The family requests privacy during this time of sadness and grievance.”
Today, as KLMO honors his life, Flaco Jiménez’s music continues to unite generations and cultures — a true testament to a legacy that will never die.
