Jennifer Peña, one of Latin music’s most influential voices of the last two decades, has dropped her latest single “Wakala”, a fiery cumbia pop track that combines irresistible rhythm, fearless lyrics, and the spirit of female empowerment. Released today (June 20, 2025), “Wakala” marks a bold new chapter for Peña as she shakes off the past and dances her way into a brighter future — with plenty of attitude.
Known for her distinctive style that fuses the energy of cumbia with modern Latin pop, Peña delivers an authentic and provocative anthem that channels frustration into freedom. The song’s playful yet biting lyrics, co-written by Pete Astudillo — “Eres un engreído, aburrido, un fracaso en mi camino” (“You’re vain, boring, a setback on my journey”) — reflect the experience of moving on from a disappointing relationship. With lines like “ya me contaron mis amigas, con todas andas coqueteando y yo en la casa limpiando” (“my friends already told me, you’re flirting with all of them and I’m at home cleaning”), Peña gives voice to those ready to let go, have fun, and reclaim their power.
“Wakala isn’t just a word, it’s a reaction,” says Peña. “It’s when you decide not to put up with it anymore and choose to laugh as you move forward.”
The single follows Peña’s recent releases, including “Fuerte” (2023) and her collaboration with Los Inquietos del Vallenato on “Nunca Niegues Que Te Amo” (2025). This year also saw Peña sign a distribution deal with Symphonic Latino, solidifying her presence in the digital music era with a renewed artistic vision.
From her Tejano roots to her success at the top of the Billboard charts, with multi-platinum albums like Libre and Seducción, Jennifer Peña has always pushed boundaries. With “Wakala”, she continues to connect with fans who’ve grown up with her music — this time, inviting them to dance through their heartbreak with strength and a smile.
“Wakala” is available now on all digital platforms.
