After a three-year hiatus, the legendary Tejano band Brown Express is back with a bang, releasing their thrilling new single, “La Chancla.” Led by renowned producer, arranger, and bandleader Rick Fuentes, the track captures the spirit of authentic Tejano music while bringing an infectious rhythm that’s sure to get fans dancing.
“La Chancla” is a vibrant testament to the group’s dedication to tradition, featuring the powerful voice and smooth basslines of Albert Garcia, one of the band’s standout vocalists. It’s a ride on the Brown Express that promises pure South Texas flavor—full steam ahead!
Rick Fuentes, a Grammy Award-winning accordionist, arranger, and producer, is no stranger to Tejano fans. Born and raised in San Jose, California, with deep family roots in South Texas, Fuentes’ natural musical talent was evident from a young age. His father, Ricardo “Richard” Fuentes, played button accordion and Farfisa organ for the iconic Chicano band Brown Express. As a child, Rick would listen to every recording, picking out keyboard parts and playing them himself.
In 1983, tragedy struck when Richard Fuentes was killed in a rollover accident while on tour with Brown Express, a moment that profoundly impacted young Rick. But he turned his grief into inspiration, determined to honor his father’s legacy and continue the family’s musical tradition.
Rick’s early years saw him performing with legendary accordionist Chavela Ortiz Hernandez and her band Grupo Express, which echoed the Brown Express sound he loved. Sadly, Chavela’s accidental death cut that time short.
After honing his craft for decades—including more than 20 years as an integral member of Ruben Ramos and The Mexican Revolution—Rick Fuentes continues to step out on his own. With a brief stint alongside Hugo Guerrero’s Fandango USA under his belt, Rick now leads the next generation of Brown Express, committed to both preserving tradition and forging new paths in Tejano music.
“La Chancla” is available now on all major digital streaming platforms. Don’t miss this exciting new chapter from Rick Fuentes y The Brown Express as they steam ahead with a sound that’s truly timeless.
