CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — In a significant development concerning the estate of late Tejano music legend Johnny Canales, a judge has ordered the freezing of his assets and appointed a temporary administrator to oversee the estate. This decision comes amid a contentious legal battle involving claims from Sylvia Castillo, who asserts she is the sole surviving spouse of Canales, and Nora Canales, who is also claiming rights to the estate.
During a hearing today in a Nueces County Court, Castillo, represented by attorney Steve Lopez, argued for an accounting and temporary injunction to prevent Nora Canales from using or depleting the estate’s assets without court oversight. Castillo’s claim is based on her marriage to Johnny Canales in 1980, although Nora Canales’ attorney, Abel Cavada, contested this, citing Castillo’s multiple marriages and divorces since then.
Judge Deanne Galvan denied a request for a continuance from Nora Canales’ legal team, emphasizing the need for immediate court intervention. Consequently, Celeste Robertson was appointed as the temporary administrator of the estate. While the assets are frozen, Nora Canales, Johnny’s television show co-host and widow, is permitted to withdraw funds for living expenses.
“She is, to the best of our understanding, using and administering that property without any kind of court oversight which is what necessitated our request for our accounting and also for the temporary injunction to keep her from spending or depleting or in any way alienating the estate’s property,” Lopez said.
In a related ruling, another judge has assigned a lawyer to oversee the estate, further complicating the legal landscape surrounding Johnny Canales’ legacy. This move aims to ensure that the estate is managed fairly and transparently during the ongoing dispute.
“Nora Canales was married to Johnny Canales for 30 years and nobody came forward,” Cavada said Wednesday after the hearing. “Sylvia Castillo didn’t come forward and say, ‘Wait a minute. I’m married to him. You can’t do that.’ She’s been here over the years and she could have brought it up at some point in the last 30 years and she didn’t, so that, that could very well, dismiss her claim.”
Castillo is seeking monetary relief of $250,000 or less and nonmonetary relief, according to the petition.
The legal proceedings highlight the complexities and emotional stakes involved in managing the estate of a beloved cultural figure. Johnny Canales, known for his influential Tejano TV show, left a significant impact on the music industry and his fans. As the legal battle unfolds, the community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that honors his legacy and contributions to Tejano music.
