La Mafia, the multiple Grammy-winning group known for their iconic Tejano music, has ventured into the world of spirits with the launch of their own brand of tequila, La Mafia Tequila Blanco Rosa. The announcement was made by band members Oscar De La Rosa and Armando Lichtenberger Jr during a press conference in Monterrey, Mexico, on Friday, October 18.
Armando Lichtenberger Jr shared the inspiration behind the launch, stating, “We decided to launch with the rose because we have the song (Un Millon de Rosas) and with the name of Oscar (De La Rosa). That dream began almost 20 years ago. I first had meetings with a family from Jalisco, in Houston, who had launched a tequila for me. We tried to reach an agreement, but it was never made. And then, it’s like fate brings you, about 4 or 5 years ago, David met a friend, he made friends with a family from Jalisco, the Lomeli family, and we made a deal, that started 4 years ago.”
The journey to create La Mafia Tequila Blanco Rosa has been a long and challenging one. Armando recounted their early experiences with tequila during their tours in the 90s, saying, “We fell in love with tequila in the first tours in the 90s. We had several celebrations, I remember celebrating in the bullring.” Oscar De La Rosa added, “And now, we’re going to have our own tequila, from La Mafia, in the dressing rooms from now on.”
Developing the tequila involved numerous trips to Jalisco from Houston, where the band worked closely with the Lomeli family to perfect the flavor. Armando explained, “We had a lot of part of us in the flavor of tequila because two years ago we went to the first to try the tequila and make the changes to the style of what we wanted. And the factory made the changes, and they brought us some tests to Houston. And so we went several times until we got what we wanted.”
La Mafia Tequila Blanco Rosa will first be available in Mexico, with plans to launch in the United States in the coming weeks. Oscar emphasized the importance of introducing the tequila in Mexico first, stating, “Our idea was to get the tequila here in Mexico, and then launch it in the United States. Many are launched in the United States, but they never come out here.”
As La Mafia approaches their 45th anniversary, the launch of their tequila marks a new chapter for the band. Oscar expressed his gratitude to their fans, saying, “Thanks to all of you. Especially thanks to all of our fans who have followed us for so many years, and are still supporting us, and are still there and thanks to all the young people who are starting to like La Mafia, the successes of La Mafia. And now, more with tequila. Yes. It’s 100% Mexican.”
La Mafia Tequila Blanco Rosa is a celebration of the band’s rich history and their dedication to innovation. With this new venture, La Mafia continues to leave their mark, both in the world of music and beyond.
