West Texas-based band Asaltø honors Tejano legacy with their latest release, “El Gorrion Y Yo,” a fresh take on a song originally recorded by Los Paisanos de Chalito Johnson, a band led by the father of Julian Johnson, head of the management team currently behind Asaltø. The cumbia was produced by award-winning hitmaker Gabriel Zavala.
In a recent interview with Tejano Nation Radio host Romeo, Asaltø frontman and accordionist Jordan Rodriguez shared the inspiration behind the new release. “The new single is a tribute to Julian’s father. He had a band called Los Paisanos, and they actually recorded it as a ranchera. Julian sent it to me one night and said, ‘Hey man, what do you think about this song as a cumbia?’ I told him, ‘Dude, I like it. It’s an extremely catchy song. Let’s see what we can do with it.’”
Rodriguez expressed his excitement about working with Gabriel Zavala for the first time. “It was just one heck of an experience. Working with Gabriel, who has created multiple number-one hits, was something I truly needed at this time in my career. The creativity that came together during the recording process was amazing. The song came out even better than I could ever expect.”
Zavala praised Rodriguez’s performance, saying, “Jordan did an amazing job on accordion and vocals! He was a pleasure to work with in the studio and gave me ZERO problems. He took direction great and had a very positive energy while recording.”
Rodriguez also shared more about the band’s journey. “We started back in 2021, initially just to give West Texas a different band. At that time, I was still performing with my dad’s band, Conjunto Mi Gusto. After my father passed away in 2022, I continued on strong, and we built Asaltø. We’ve created quite a bit of music together, mostly original material written by me or close friends.”
“El Gorrion Y Yo” from Asaltø is now available on all digital music platforms, offering fans a blend of Tejano tradition and modern creativity.
