The Tejano music scene is buzzing with excitement as the legendary Tortilla Factory prepares to release its 50th-anniversary album, featuring none other than pop star Paula DeAnda. The highly-anticipated album showcases the collaboration between the Tejano veterans and the young Latina sensation, who happens to be the first cousin of the late Gilbert DeAnda, also known as Coyote, the former lead singer of Tortilla Factory.

Paula DeAnda, who has over 2.5 million followers on social media, is no stranger to success. She was the first Latina ever to be signed by Clive Davis of Arista Records, the music mogul who discovered Whitney Houston and many other stars. She impressed Davis with her powerful voice and charisma, and he signed her on the spot after hearing her sing. She has made the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart three times, with her biggest hit “Walk Away” reaching number 18. She has also collaborated with superstars like Lil Wayne, Bow Wow, and more.

But Paula DeAnda has not forgotten her roots. She is proud of her Tejano heritage and has always admired Tortilla Factory, especially her cousin Coyote, who passed away in 2019. She was thrilled when Alfredo Guerrero, the leader of the group, invited her to join them for their 50th anniversary album. She agreed to record two songs with them: a remake of “Somos Novios”, a Tortilla Factory classic, and an original song written by Guerrero, DeAnda, and Gabriel Zavala, an award-winning hitmaker in the Tejano industry, who produced the track.

The remake of “Somos Novios” is a special tribute to Coyote, as Paula DeAnda sings a duet with a recording of his voice, produced by multiple Grammy-winner Gilbert Velasquez. The idea by Guerrero was inspired by Natalie Cole and Nat “King” Cole‘s duet “Unforgettable”, which was a huge success in the ’90s. The song was arranged to blend the old and new generations of Tejano music, creating a beautiful harmony between Paula DeAnda and Coyote.

Guerrero commented, “I thought it would be really excellent and fire to do it with Paula and Coyote, since they’re family. I was able to record that with Gilbert Velasquez and it’s freakin’ amazing!”

The original song showcases Paula DeAnda’s versatility and Tortilla Factory’s energy. The song also features The Mariachi Divas, a multiple Grammy award-winning group that adds a touch of Mexican flair to the track. Guerrero and Zavala recently traveled to Los Angeles to finalize a video for the song.

“It’s amazing,” exclaimed Guerrero. “It’s a cumbia international, kind of like a Maluma vibe. It’s just on a whole other level.”

The Tejano Music Awards will be the stage for Paula DeAnda and Tortilla Factory’s live performance to premiere both songs. The event, which celebrates the best of Tejano music, will take place at the Boeing Center at Tech Port Arena in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, October 21, 2023. It will be a historic moment for Tejano music, as two generations of talent come together to honor their past and embrace their future.
