A park in Houston, Texas named after bicultural icon Selena will receive a one million dollar renovation.
The Houston Chronicle reports Selena Quintanilla Perez-Denver Harbor Park will acquire new playgrounds, swings, a new parking lot and repaired trail, new lighting and tables, benches and drinking fountains. There will also be an improved area for T-ball and the playgrounds will be divided into sections for kids ages 2 to 5 and 5 to 12.
If any funds remain, new restroom facilities and upgrades to the concession building will also be made at the park.
The Houston City Council voted to submit a grant application to the state for funding, but the vote was a formality as Representative Ana Hernandez (D-Houston) previously obtained the funds from the state budget during the Texas Legislature Session last year, according to the Houston Chronicle.

“Selena Quintanilla Perez Park is a focal point in the Denver Harbor community, and I am honored to be in a position to help secure the funding needed for repairs and upgrades to the park and its facilities,” Rep. Hernandez shared in a statement. “I look forward to working with the City of Houston, the Denver Harbor residents, and all stakeholders to move this project forward.”
The park was renamed to honor Selena in 1995, less than a year after the Tejano star was murdered in Corpus Christi. Denver Harbor Park has been at 6402 Market Street since 1945.
Selena was known as the “Queen of Tejano Music” because of the immense impact she had on what once was a male-dominated musical genre.
