Newly released court documents reveal that former Tejano singer Joe Lopez, who is in jail for multiple sex offenses involving a minor, also impregnated a 14-year-old girl.
Houston TV station KTRK reported the documents on Tuesday after the attorney for Lopez held a press conference to talk about the latest details of his parole status.
Bill Habern, Joe Lopez’s attorney, says the former singer didn’t realize she was underage because he said “she looked mature for her age.”
“This reminds me of one of my daughters. When she was 14 she looked like she was 18 or 20. Have you seen a picture of her? She looked very adult. They did develop a relationship,” said Habern.
The former singer of Grupo Mazz has spent the past decade behind bars after he was convicted in 2006 for the rape of his 13-year-old niece.
Joe Lopez is still in prison after being granted parole on January 6 and must complete a four-month sex offender program before being released. Krystal Lopez requested the board overturn the parole. The board is considering it.
“He’s done his time. He’s obeyed the rules, that is, he’s been an outstanding inmate,” said Habern.
The parole board could decide within the next month whether Lopez’s parole that was granted will be revoked.
