The nominees for Best Tejano Album at the 17th annual Latin Grammy Awards were announced on Wednesday and one nominee had Tejano fans asking, #WhoAreMarianYMariel?
This year’s Best Tejano Album category had familiar faces, including Ram Herrera, Jay Perez, Michael Salgado and even The Legends like Freddie Martinez, but who are Marian Y Mariel?
Marian and Mariel Santos are 21-year-old twin sisters, from Alvarado, Veracruz, Mexico and were first discovered on the television singing competition Código F.A.M.A. in 2005, where they won the group competition at the age of 9.
The sisters then brought their talents to La Voz México, as coach Aleks Syntek chose them for his team in Season 1 of the show in 2011. The sisters finished as semifinalists.
Marian Y Marial released their EP Vulnerable A Ti in January 2016 and now have been nominated for a Latin Grammy for this EP. Their music is described as Cumbia Norteña with a mix of Tex-Mex. The lead single for the EP is “Mi Mala Suerte” and has received radio airplay.
Winners for the 17th annual Latin Grammys will be revealed Nov. 17, 2016, live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, and broadcast on the Univision Network from 8–11 p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m. Central).
