The death of Tejano legend Emilio Navaira came as shock to the Tejano community on Monday night as news of the singer’s passing spread via social media.

The Grammy Award winner was found unresponsive at his home in New Braunfels, Texas, when family members returned home on Monday night.  A call was placed to the New Braunfels Police Department and Navaira was transported to a local hospital, where we was pronounced dead.

Sources close to the family confirmed to Tejano Nation about the death of “El Rey Del Rodeo” late Monday night as an apparent heart attack.  He was 53. An autopsy is expected to reveal the cause of death.

Navaira’s manager/agent Joe Casillas released a statement on behalf of the family on Tuesday afternoon. It read in part:

As most of you will know, it is a bit early to give any type of statement of the cause of his death, we will wait for the autopsy results to indicate that cause.

We ask the fans and media to please respect the families space at this time as they assimilate their tremendous loss and to give them time to prepare a proper good bye to the REY DEL RODEO.

The Navaira Family would like to extend their gratitude for all of the love and condolences, for always being there for Emilio, they are requesting time to prepare the funeral services and the next steps needed. “You can be sure that the fans will have to say good bye to Emilio” said Maru Navaira, wife of the singer, “We are just asking for time” she added.

Tejano Nation sends our heartfelt condolences to the Navaira family on the untimely passing of Emilio.

I have had Emilio’s Cassette (Life is Good) on my desk for about 09 years now. Love looking at his picture and just that reminder to listen to him during the day from my computer. Saw you here at your last concert in Albuquerque. I feel blessed that I got to take a picture with you and another autograph. May the Lord Bless You Forever. You Will NOT be Forgotten.
