Univision Exposes Sexual Abuse of Women Working in the Janitorial Industry with “Rape on the Night Shift”

MIAMI – The Univision Network will air a gripping documentary that uncovers stories of sexual abuse secretly taking place after business hours in office buildings and malls across the United States. The alleged victims are mostly immigrant women, many of them undocumented, who never expected that a simple janitorial job would put them at risk of sexual exploitation and humiliation by their co-workers and supervisors.

“Rape on the Night Shift / Violación de un Sueño: Jornada Nocturna” features testimonials from female janitorial workers who allege that they have been subjected to sexual abuse on the job during the night shift, as well as interviews with an attorney specializing in sexual harassment laws in the workplace and a watchdog group that monitors workplace conditions for janitors. Many of the women in this situation are unwilling to report their attackers for fear of losing their jobs or getting deported and employers have often fallen short in dealing with the problem.

For this extensive investigation, Univision News reteamed with FRONTLINE (PBS),the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley, Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting, and KQED public radio. A prior collaboration in 2013 produced “Rape in the Fields/Violación de un Sueño,” an acclaimed documentary that directly led to the enactment of a bill to protect female farmworkers from sexual abuse in California and was honored with a duPont-Columbia Award and a Robert F. Kennedy Award.

Univision will exclusively broadcast the Spanish-language version of the 60-minute documentary, accompanied by original, multiplatform content from all production partners.
