Tejano Outlaw Band is quickly carving out its place as one of the most promising new acts in the Tejano music scene. Hailing from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, the group has already been packing dance floors across North Texas, building a loyal following through high-energy live performances and a sound rooted deeply in tradition. Now, the buzz is about to get louder as the band releases its debut single, “Quiero Volver Contigo.”
The song is an original Progressive Tejano Ranchera written and produced by Tejano icon Shelly Lares (LMD), CEO of ShellShock Records 3, with lyrics by award-winning songwriter Jose Rosario. The collaboration brings together classic Tejano nostalgia with a fresh, modern polish—making the track a natural fit for today’s Tejano and Regional Mexican radio while staying true to the genre’s heart.
Frontman Mark Flores and musical director Michael Perez recently shared behind-the-scenes details about the making of the single on the Tejano Time Podcast with host Keith Leal, offering insight into how the project came together.
“It was produced by Ms. Shelly Lares, so again, kudos to her for believing in us,” Flores said. He also took time to recognize the band’s promotional team, Texican Entertainment, and Rachel and Ram Ramirez. “They were very instrumental in putting us in front of the right people, in front of Shelly. They reached out to her with some video of us, and here we are.”
Flores emphasized the importance of honoring Tejano’s legacy while creating something new. “Nothing against what’s out there now, but I’m true Tejano—fourth, fifth generation Texan. I grew up on this stuff. I wanted something that brings that nostalgia back, that hits that vibe.”
For Perez, the studio experience was both professional and deeply personal. He recalled working closely with Lares on the arrangement, including the addition of strings that elevated the track’s emotional impact. “She was very easy to work with—collaborative, supportive. It was full of passion and heart, everything you want in a producer,” Perez shared. “It was full circle for me, 25 years later.”
Flores admitted that recording vocals in front of a Tejano legend came with its own pressure. “I was a little intimidated, not gonna lie,” he said with a laugh. “You’re singing in the booth and Shelly Lares is in the control room. But she was so encouraging. We took it line by line, and once I just sang it from the heart, it came together.”
Lares’ confidence in the performance sealed the moment. “When we finished, she said, ‘I like it. You don’t need to do anything else,’” Flores recalled. “If Shelly liked it, I was good.”
Perez also highlighted Flores’ versatility as a vocalist, noting that Tejano Outlaw Band’s live shows span multiple styles. “We do Tejano, country, cumbias, disco—so many different things,” he said. “He went in there and aced it, and the end result is what you hear now.”
With “Quiero Volver Contigo,” Tejano Outlaw Band delivers a debut that is equal parts nostalgic and forward-looking—dance-floor tested, radio-ready, and built to connect instantly with listeners. As the DFW-based group steps onto the wider Tejano stage, this first release signals that Tejano Outlaw Band is not just arriving—they’re ready to stay.
