Texas Folklife has announced the appointment of three-time Grammy winner and longtime cultural advocate Sunny Sauceda as its new Deputy Director, marking a significant milestone for both the organization and the respected Tejano artist.
Texas Folklife shared the news on January 13, 2026, noting that Sauceda’s expanded role reflects the organization’s continued growth and its commitment to leadership rooted in lived experience, trust, and community connection.
In his new position, Sauceda will work closely with Executive Director Dr. Elisha R. Oliver and the Texas Folklife team to advance the nonprofit’s mission of preserving, presenting, and celebrating the living traditions that shape Texas. His responsibilities will include supporting programs, strengthening relationships with artists and culture bearers, and reinforcing connections between educators, community partners, and the public.
“Sunny has long been part of the heartbeat of this organization,” said Dr. Oliver. “This role recognizes what he already brings—deep cultural knowledge, generosity of spirit, and a genuine commitment to artists and communities. I’m excited to continue this work together in a way that feels aligned, collaborative, and grounded in our shared values.”
Known to Tejano fans worldwide as an award-winning musician, Sauceda has also built a reputation as a mentor and cultural leader dedicated to intergenerational learning and the vitality of traditional music. His appointment underscores Texas Folklife’s belief that strong leadership emerges from long-standing relationships and a deep understanding of community traditions.
“I’m honored to step into this role with Texas Folklife,” Sauceda said. “This organization has always been about people, stories, and community. I look forward to continuing to support the artists and culture bearers who make this work meaningful.”
As Deputy Director, Sauceda will contribute to program development, partner engagement, and organizational planning, with a special focus on youth education, intergenerational exchange, and expanding public access to folk and traditional arts. His leadership will help ensure that Texas Folklife remains responsive and accountable to the communities it serves.
Sauceda has long been a trusted presence within Texas Folklife’s initiatives, helping connect audiences to the stories, histories, and traditions behind the music and cultural practices that define Texas’ diverse cultural landscape. In this expanded role, he will continue championing culture bearers while helping guide the organization through its next chapter.
The appointment comes during a period of strong momentum for Texas Folklife, as the organization broadens its education programs, deepens documentation efforts, and creates new pathways for Texans to engage with the traditions that make the state a true mosaic of cultures.
Texas Folklife is a statewide nonprofit dedicated to preserving and presenting the rich diversity of Texas traditions through education programs, apprenticeships, live events, and media projects—supporting culture bearers while inviting people of all ages to explore the traditions that shape everyday life across Texas.
