SAN ANTONIO, TX — Award-winning producer, songwriter, and musician Gabriel Zavala has once again pushed creative boundaries in Tejano music, releasing a fresh Tejano Cumbia remix of Morgan Wallen’s hit single, “I Got Better.”
Zavala, known for his innovative sound and musical versatility, shared the inspiration and process behind the remix.
“Please enjoy this Tejano Cumbia version of Morgan Wallen’s amazing song ‘I Got Better,’” Zavala said. “I used software to split audio tracks and make stems. I re-recorded the drums, percussion, bass, and added three-row button accordion and bajo sexto.”
The spark for the remix struck during a late-night drive from San Marcos to San Antonio, Texas.
“I was listening to country radio in the early morning hours. I had never heard this song before, as I usually listen to Tejano radio,” he recalled. “I listened to the rhythms of the original song and heard ideas and structures that were so familiar to Tejano music — especially the bass line. Something in my soul needed to hear this song in the version I am presenting here.”
Despite an exhausting day in the studio, Zavala couldn’t ignore the creative pull.
“When I got home around 5:30 a.m., I had to get right to work even though I was dead tired,” he explained. “The song was resonating in my soul and I had to get this out of my mind. I didn’t complete the song until 10 a.m. I loved the process and fell in love with the song.”
With a career spanning more than 25 years as one of the most cutting-edge producers in Tejano music, Zavala has written and produced for some of the genre’s biggest names under his Zavala Music Productions banner. He also serves as the longtime musical director and producer for his wife, Tejano star Stefani Montiel, for over 35 years.
A multiple GRAMMY-winning producer and three-time Tejano Music Awards winner, Zavala continues to redefine the soundscape of Tejano, bridging genres and generations.
“If you are a Tejano fan,” he added, “I hope you enjoy this version made just for you.”
