SAN ANTONIO, TX — Tejano music icon Ram Herrera has shared an encouraging update with fans following his revelation last month that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer.
In an emotional video posted to social media in early September, the 65-year-old singer opened up about the deeply personal news. “I want to talk to you a little bit about something very personal to me. I’ve been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer of the prostate. It is treatable from what I understand,” he said. “It is a scary situation, but it is treatable. I know through the power of prayer and other prayers… I’m going to see it through and through the power of Christ, I’m going to see it through.”
On Tuesday (September 30), Herrera took to social media once again, assuring fans that he remains strong in the fight. “Still standing, still fighting, and forever grateful. Your prayers have carried me this far, and I feel every bit of your love and support. It’s not fun getting poked, but I gotta do what I gotta do. 💉 The fast is over—time for a good meal! Morning appointment done. Next doctor appointment, this afternoon. Trust in Him, and trust the process. God is amazing. Sending my fans all of my love!”
Herrera’s treatment plan includes radiation therapy and medication, though not chemotherapy. He also acknowledged that lifestyle changes, including diet adjustments, will be part of his journey, but expressed confidence and optimism.
This year has been a milestone for Herrera in more ways than one. Over the summer, he celebrated 45 years in the Tejano music industry, and in June, he married his wife, whom he credits as a great source of strength and support. Fans will also remember his resilience in 2017, when he overcame serious health issues that included a knee infection, collapsed lung, and heart complications.
Known as “The Outlaw” of Tejano music, Herrera’s career began in the early 1980s as the powerhouse vocalist for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales before launching a successful solo career with his band The Outlaws. His 1986 gold-certified debut album Most Wanted Man and 1989’s The Outlaw cemented his place as one of the genre’s most influential voices. Over the years, he has earned Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, multiple Tejano Music Awards, and delivered chart-topping classics that remain fan favorites. More recently, Herrera has also embraced gospel music, sharing messages of faith and hope through his powerful voice.
As he continues treatment, Herrera remains determined to keep performing and living life to the fullest. “I want to keep on singing. I want to still be around. I got a lot of life left,” he told fans.
For now, Herrera says he will continue trusting in his faith, his doctors, and the unwavering support of his fans.
