HOUSTON, TX — Nine-year-old Sophia Hernandez is fighting through a tough week with a brutal relapse of leukemia at a Houston hospital. But in the middle of her pain, her hospital room was suddenly filled with music and hope when Latin GRAMMY winner Jesse Turner of Grupo Siggno walked in, guitar in hand, and sang just for her.
All Sophia had asked for was a video. Instead, Jesse showed up in person, bringing comfort to her and her family during their toughest battle yet.
“Doctors are saying this will be difficult,” Turner shared, “pero mi madre siempre decía, para Dios nada es imposible (but my mother always said, for God nothing is impossible).” Turner’s mother passed away last month.
Sophia is in urgent need of white blood cell donations as infections complicate her chemotherapy treatment. Those who are eligible to donate are encouraged to call (713) 792-7777 or (832) 748-6790 for details on how to help.
Turner shared the emotional moment on social media, writing:
“The family wanted us to share Sophia’s story with you because prayers are needed. She has a very tough week she will battle with her life against Leukemia through chemotherapy. Doctors are saying this will be difficult pero mi madre siempre decía para Dios NADA ES IMPOSIBLE… All she wanted was a video from me singing the songs she and her little brother like, but I surprised her at the hospital in Houston and sang to her in person. This is life, and life is hard. Hold on to your loved ones for tomorrow is never promised. PLEASE do not thank me, instead thank her and keep her in your prayers. Her name is Sophia Alessandra Hernandez and she is 9 years old. Gracias madre por darme la fuerza de estar allí y gracias amigos de Rosenberg por orar por ella, que Dios los bendiga.”
Turner continued to honor Sophia by dedicating a song to her during Grupo Siggno’s performance at the Fort Bend County Fair in Rosenberg, Texas, on September 20.
Now, Sophia’s family, friends, and supporters across the Tejano community are rallying in prayer and action to give this brave 9-year-old the strength to keep fighting.
To help Sophia by donating white blood cells, please call (713) 792-7777 or (832) 748-6790.
