Tejano music has lost one of its most beloved voices. Jose “Pepe” Sanchez, a respected figure in the Tejano and Conjunto music community, passed away on July 12, 2025, at the age of 73. A true icon in the genre, Sanchez was known not only for his influential career as a Master of Ceremonies and radio personality, but also for his tireless efforts to uplift artists, support those in need, and bring communities together through music.

According to his obituary published by Legacy, Pepe Sanchez was a “catalyst in the Tejano/Conjunto Music world,” and his contributions were widely recognized throughout his life. He was inducted into the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame in 2017 and honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Pura Vida Awards in San Antonio in August 2024.

Pepe’s career began at the bailes, working as an MC for renowned promoters Arturo Villarreal and Delmiro Garcia. It was at one of these events that he caught the attention of Manuel Davila, owner of the legendary San Antonio radio station KEDA 1540. That chance moment launched a career that would span decades and touch countless lives.

He made history as the first-ever MC for the first three Tejano Music Awards, beginning in 1980, helping to set the tone for what would become the genre’s biggest annual celebration. More than a voice behind the mic, Pepe was known for his generosity and selflessness—using every platform he had to spotlight rising stars, support charitable causes, and lend a hand to those in need.

“Till his dying days, Pepe was always trying to help someone,” his family shared. “He will truly be missed by his family, friends, Tejano/Conjunto artists, and the entire community.”

Pepe’s son, Joey Sanchez—a Tejano musician and drummer for Art Tigerina Band, formerly with Grupo Rodeo and Texas Latino—shared a heartfelt tribute on social media along with vintage family photos. “My Dad had a BIG HEART. He did so much for our industry. Thank You! Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.”

A visitation and celebration of life will take place on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at Castillo Funeral Home Chapel G2, located at 520 N. General McMullen Dr in San Antonio, Texas, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a rosary service at 6 p.m. Final viewing will be held Thursday, July 24, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., followed by a graveside service at San Fernando Cemetery 2, 746 Castroville Rd, at 10:30 a.m.

Pepe’s favorite saying—“Zapatele”—from his all-time favorite band Tierra Tejana, will continue to echo in the hearts of those he inspired. Rest in peace, Pepe Sanchez, and thank you for a lifetime of love, laughter, and legendary music.
