Vatican City — The world mourns the loss of Pope Francis, who passed away peacefully at the age of 88. As the first pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, Francis was a historic figure who led the Roman Catholic Church through a decade of profound change, compassion, and connection.
Pope Francis died from a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican doctor Adrea Arcangeli confirmed in his death certificate released on Monday (April 21).
Cardinal Kevin Farrell had previously announced Pope Francis’ death in a text on Monday via Vatican News.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” he wrote. “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church. He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Pope Francis became the 266th pontiff in March 2013. From the outset of his papacy, he chose humility over grandeur—opting for simpler attire, shunning opulence, and calling for a “poor Church for the poor.” His tenure was defined by a progressive tone on issues such as climate change, income inequality, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and immigration reform—often challenging the status quo and urging global leaders to act with conscience and mercy.
His impact was deeply felt across Latin America and especially among Tejano communities in Texas and beyond, where many faithful saw in him a reflection of their culture, language, and values. For millions, he was not just a spiritual leader, but a symbol of hope and empathy in turbulent times.
In his many travels, including his historic visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in 2016, Pope Francis extended open arms to immigrants, workers, and the disenfranchised. He championed indigenous rights, promoted interfaith dialogue, and urged young people to build bridges, not walls.
As messages of condolence pour in from across the globe, one thing is clear: Pope Francis’ legacy transcends religion. He will be remembered as a pope of the people, a voice for the voiceless, and a shepherd who walked among his flock with love and humility.
Funeral services and public memorials are expected to draw millions from around the world. The Vatican has announced that preparations are underway for a period of mourning and the eventual convening of a conclave to elect his successor.
Tejano Nation extends its heartfelt condolences to Catholics worldwide and honors the life of a man who reminded us that kindness, compassion, and justice are the true pillars of faith.
