The music legend was honored with the National Heritage Fellowship and he opens up about the signficance of the award and his deep connection with his audinece in a recent interview.
Little Joe considers the National Heritage Fellowship award as the biggest honor in his career. Having spent over six decades entertaining crowds globally, the award has had a profound impact on his life and career. It brings closure and honor, signifying the highest recognition for his contribution to the Arts. Little Joe is currently engrossed in the processes accompanying this prestigious accolade, emphasizing the immense significance it holds for him and his music.
“This was really a big plus to my life, really to my career,” Little Joe told KSAT-TV. “I feel closure because that’s the highest recognition that you can get for the Arts for what I do, for the music I do.”
Little Joe’s bond with his audience runs deep, characterized by love, energy, and familial ties. He expresses his sincere affection for the people and the unique connection he feels with his audience – a connection that he aptly describes as ‘Familia’. Observing several generations returning to his shows, from the children of his younger days to present-day grandparents, Little Joe’s music has truly transcended time, creating a lasting impact on the hearts of many.
“When I was in my 20s, couples would bring their children for me to take pitcutes with and those children now are grandparents. It’s just amazing,” said Little Joe. “Music is about the soul and if you can convey that to the listener, that’s what it’s about.”
