Many fans of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, the iconic Tejano singer who was tragically killed in 1995, have visited the Selena Memorial – Mirador De La Flor in Corpus Christi, Texas. The memorial, which features a life-size bronze statue of Selena, is a popular tourist attraction and a tribute to her legacy.
But if you are planning to visit the memorial in the next two weeks, you might notice something different. The Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department announced that the mirador will be temporarily closed for lighting upgrades from November 1 to November 15, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., weather permitting. The mirador will be open to the public on weekends, but it will not have any lighting until the upgrades are complete.
The lighting upgrade will replace the existing lighting with LED lights, which are more energy-efficient and durable. The LED lights will also enhance the appearance of the statue and the surrounding area, making it more visible and attractive at night. The lighting upgrade is part of a larger project to improve all the miradors at the bayfront, which are scenic overlooks that offer views of the Corpus Christi Bay.
The Selena Memorial – Mirador De La Flor was unveiled in 1997, two years after Selena’s death. It was designed by H.W. “Buddy” Tatum, a local artist who also created other sculptures in Corpus Christi. The statue depicts Selena wearing a leather jacket and holding a microphone, as she often did in her concerts. The statue also includes a carved white rose on a dedication plaque.
Selena fans from all over the world visit the memorial to pay their respects and take photos with the statue. Some fans also leave flowers, candles, and other items as offerings. The memorial is considered a symbol of Selena’s impact on music, culture, and the Latino community.
If you want to see the Selena Memorial – Mirador De La Flor in its new light, you will have to wait until November 15. But don’t worry, the statue will still be there, shining like a star.
