Joe Lopez, one of the most iconic figures of Tejano music, has announced that he and his band will not be attending the 43rd Tejano Music Awards, which will take place on October 21 in San Antonio, Texas. The singer released a statement on his official Facebook page, explaining that the decision was made for reasons beyond his control related to the organizers of the event.
“With deep feeling, we announce to our beloved public that unfortunately we will not be present at the 43rd Tejano Music Awards event for reasons beyond our control related to the organizers of the event. We had expected with great excitement the opportunity to meet at this event. We appreciate everyone’s understanding and support they have always given us; We look forward to the opportunity to meet at future events,” Lopez wrote.

The statement did not specify what kind of issues he had with the organizers, but it’s speculated that it might have something to do with his legal situation. Lopez was released from prison in 2018 after serving 12 years for raping his niece. He has always maintained his innocence. Lopez has been trying to revive his musical career since then but has faced opposition from some sectors of the Tejano community.
The Tejano Music Awards are considered the most important awards for Tejano music, a genre that blends Mexican and American influences. Lopez has won several awards in the past, including Male Vocalist of the Year and Male Entertainer of the Year. He is also known for being part of the legendary group Mazz, which he co-founded with Jimmy Gonzalez in 1978.
