Just a day after her big night of wins at the Latin American Music Awards in Las Vegas, Latin global superstar Becky G performed during the second weekend of Coachella 2023 on Friday night including a tribute medley to one of her biggest influences, Selena Quintanilla-Perez.
The medley of Selena hits included “Como La Flor,” “La Carcacha,” “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom,” and “Baila Esta Cumbia.”
Becky G is one of many of today’s pop stars that are influenced by the Queen of Cumbia and she spoke about that influence in an interview after the release of the Spanglish remix of “Si Una Vez” with Play-N-Skillz, Frankie J and Kap G. “So many people still feel connected to her and her legacy remains,” said Becky G. “She’s somebody that I look to for guidance and look to for reference of whatever decision it is that I make in my career.”
The 26-year-old singer and actress gained recognition in 2011 when she began posting videos of herself covering popular songs online. She caught the attention of record producer Dr. Luke, who offered her a record deal. She achieved mainstream success with her multiple platinum selling single “Shower” in 2013. Her 2019 debut studio album Mala Santa was certified 7x platinum by RIAA Latin. Her second studio album, Esquemas, released last year, debuted at number 1 on the Latin Pop Albums chart.
