Jaime DeAnda continues on long recovery after life-threatening medical emergency, crowdfunding set up for medical and recovery costs

Jaime DeAnda continues on his long recovery after the Conjunto music icon was hospitalized in December for a life-threatening medical emergency that required surgery. A crowdfunding campaign has been set up to help the 57-year-old singer with medical and recovery costs.

DeAnda’s wife, Darlene DeAnda, set up the GoFundMe page for her husband and shared more details on his medical emergency. “Jaime had a medical emergency that got so bad it made it almost impossible for him to breathe. If I had waited any longer to take him to the ER he might not be here today,” she said. “When the doctor finally saw him he said, ‘Wow this is bad! Mrs. DeAnda, we need to put a trachea down his throat if not he will die but even with the trachea, there is a 50/50 chance he might not make it.’ Before I could even answer, the doctor had the nurse wheel Jaime away and said we have to do this now we are just losing time.”

Jaime’s management, Envy Road Entertainment, released a statement on Dec. 26 with more details about the medical emergency for the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Famer.

“What happened to Jaime De Anda? In 2004, Jaime had half of his lung removed due to second-hand smoke from playing in clubs and bars at a young age. Last week, Jaime developed an infection in his tooth, which infected his neck, jaw, throat, and lung. Doctors had to surgically cut three areas of his neck and jaw to reduce swelling. The music industry almost lost Jaime De Anda due to the swelling of his tongue and throat and he could not breathe on his own. But the fast-acting doctors and nurses saved his life. I, Julian Jullzz Johnson, would like to personally thank his wife Darlene DeAnda, All the staff at the hospital nurses doctors, and to all the fans that have prayed for Jaime…Your prayers worked!”

Johnson shared more details via phone with Tejano Nation on the musician’s condition that prompted the hospitalization on Dec. 21. “The swelling got so bad. His neck was the size of a football and his tongue the size of a cucumber,” he said. “Jaime will be in recovery for probably a good five weeks rehab. After that, the doctor said he should be okay if nothing goes wrong.”

Jaime received life-saving treatment including surgery that required sedated recovery in the ICU for three days. He will need physical therapy to recuperate, which is an out-of-pocket expense for the Grammy-nominated accordionist.

“We are trying to raise funds to assist with related to his medical care, recovery and make it easier for him to get back to living a full and active life,” added Darlene. “Thank you so much in advance for your support, it is greatly appreciated.”
