Abraham Quintanilla and Chris Perez have amicably resolved their legal dispute, according to statements from both via social media on Tuesday afternoon (Sept 14).
Perez, the husband of late Latin music icon Selena, shared his statement via Twitter that said, “Good news! I wanted to give everyone an update to let you know that I have amicably resolved my legal dispute with Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. and the entire Quintanilla family. Now that these issues are behind us, going forward, my hope, and the hope of the Quintanilla family, is for us to work together to continue to honor and celebrate the legacy of Selena.”
A few minutes later Quintanilla released a similar statement on Facebook. He said, “I wanted to give everyone an update to let you know that I and the entire Quintanilla family have amicably resolved our legal dispute with Christopher Perez. Now that these issues are behind us, going forward, my hope, and the hope of the Quintanilla family, is for us to work together to continue to honor and celebrate the legacy of Selena.”
Quintanilla filed a lawsuit in 2016 against Perez, his Blue Mariachi Productions, and TV production company Endemol Shine to block the development of a TV series based on Perez’s book, “To Selena, With Love,” alleging that only Selena’s estate has the right to her name, image and “to author or authorize and commercially exploit a book, play, video, film, TV movie” about her life. Quintanilla’s attorneys argued the TV series would violate an estate properties agreement Perez and other members of Selena’s family signed in 1995 following the singer’s death.
The lawsuit was dismissed in 2019 after an agreement. The agreement also states that much of the details of the case will now be kept confidential including depositions, financial records, and other “project production information.”
Caller.com reports online court records reveal Quintanilla and Perez filed a joint motion to dismiss the lawsuit in the 148th District Court on Sept. 8, 2021.
