Tejano legend Tomas ‘Tonka’ Velasquez passes away

Tejano legend Tomas “Tonka” Velasquez passed away on Thursday (September 14). He was 72. No details were given on cause of death.

News of the Tejano R.O.O.T.S. Hall of Famer’s passing quickly began to spread over social media as many fans and fellow musicians remembered Velasquez for his contributions to music.

The Robstown, Texas native was a veteran of the conjunto circuit, as a singer, songwriter and arranger for more than 30 years. He played with many musical groups including Massizo, Los Chachos, Tony De La Rosa, Juan Sifuentes and Tonka y Libre.
